Sunday School

Bethany’s Sunday School Programs

Adult Sunday School:

Wesley Class – The Wesley Class is a class for “young adults” …keep in mind, however,  that depends on how you define young adult! We have members from the lower 20’s to the mid 50’s! We combine coffee and learning: whether it is a bible study, the study of a popular piece of Christian literature, or a DVD-based study and discussion. Our focus is on trying to enhance our relationship with Christ and with each other. This class meets in Room 08 in the lower wing of the Chandler Education Building.

Lizzie Grey Chandler Class – This class is named for one of Bethany’s late members whose faith made a tremendous impression on all who knew her. The class meets in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45, starting with coffee and fellowship. Class members are encouraged to participate in discussion and class activities. In this class we learn, we share, and we grow in our faith. We discuss many current and sometimes controversial books such as “The Shack,” “Think on These Things,” “Your Money Counts,” and others. We are also involved in local missions, such as rebuilding hurricane-damaged homes in eastern North Carolina. Other missions include working in the Durham Soup Kitchen, the MERCI Center for disaster relief, and the Durham Rescue Mission. Our class sponsors a booth at the Duke football games to fund our mission work.

Cornelia Class - The Cornelia Bible Class is made up of some of the oldest members of Bethany. We meet in room 17 on the second floor of the
Chandler Educational Building at 9:45. Our Sunday School lessons come from the Cokesbury Adult Bible Studies curriculum. Due to our age group
(65+), we have a lot to add to our discussions due to our knowledge of the Bible and our many life experiences. Our mission work is primarily local.
We are very active in Meals on Wheels, the Urban Society Food Pantry, the Urban Ministry Program, and the church work areas of Acolytes and
Flowers/Paraments. The Cornelia Class always welcomes new members: we are friendly, have dedicated and knowledgeable teachers, and we love
the Lord. Come join us!

Harvey Black Class - The Harvey Black Class meets in the Harvey Black Chapel, room 12 on the second floor of the Chandler Educational Building each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. We have 30 members on roll with an average attendance of 22. We range in age from the lower fifties to the eighties. We may seem old in age, but we are young at heart. Our projects include bake sales, pepper and flavoring sales, luminary sales at Christmas time, and special offerings as needed. We support both the Men’s and Women’s divisions at the Durham Rescue Mission, the Battered Women’s Coalition, and the Ten Dollar Club. We make fruit baskets for all of our shut-ins at Thanksgiving and play Santa to a needy family at Christmas. All of our class money is spent on others, never ourselves. Class teachers are either class members or the church pastor. We welcome all who are interested in learning more about the Bible and in putting their energies toward bettering our local community.

Youth Sunday School

Children’s Sunday School - Bethany offers a Sunday School class for young children pre-school – Kindergarten. Little ones are introduced to
God’s word with stories from The Children’s Bible and Godly Play, a creative and imaginative approach to Christian nurture. A multi-age class for
Elementary School age children is also offered. Using FaithWeaver, children study the Old and New Testament using a variety of fun filled experiences (drama, singing, arts and crafts) and learn to “weave their faith into everyday life”. Preschool classes are offered in room 07 on the lower level of the Chandler Educational Building, and the Elementary Class is offered in room 04, also on the lower level. Note: Nursery Care is also offered during Sunday School in room 01.

Youth Sunday School – Bethany offers a class for the Middle and Senior High School Students in classroom 06 on the lower level of the Chandler Educational Building. The youth class studies several contemporary studies, all biblically based. We also serve with Urban Ministries every other month, serving meals to homeless individuals and families. We are a small class, but that means we are a close and supportive group, and we relish our fellowship as much as our learning and study. Our walk with Christ is a continuous journey…come join us as we discover how God works in our lives!
