Bethany UMC Youth

New Orleans Mission Trip 2012

Who we are:

  • Our group is unique and creative, heavily involved in mission work, with a serious interest in Skateboarding (due to the interests of our current attendees). This is a major element in the group bonding and friendship, seeing as they all enjoy skateboarding and hanging out, at church as well as away from the church setting.
  • Some other fun activities that we participate in during our youth meeting times are: fishing, watching movies, lock-in’s, holiday celebrations, Durham Bulls baseball games, art expression, Pilgrimage (attended the past 3 years), and a variety of other fun activities depending on the group’s interests and desires.
  • We are composed of teenage boys and a flexible female youth leader, but are welcoming to anyone that would like to join us.
  • Our basic age range is from High School (Freshman – Senior) and Early College Students if they would like to continue attending our group once they have graduated.

When we meet:

  • Sunday School: 9:50am every Sunday
  • UMYF meets every other week on Sunday after the service, however I have the specific dates posted below.
  • INSERT CALENDAR DATES HERE

Ministries we are involved in:

  • Urban Ministries of Durham: We prepare and serve a meal every other month on the last Friday of the month (See calendar for specific dates)
  • Urban Ministries of Durham – Clothing/Shoe Collection
  • Yearly Mission Trips: Travel to another area and assist in disaster relief, etc. Areas traveled to in the past include:
    • Beverly, KY (2 trips)
    • Philadelphia, PA
    • Goldsboro, NC
    • New Orleans, LA (2 trips)
  • Bethany Projects such as stew making, yard sales, Christmas Eve service luminaries, poinsettia sales, fundraising at Duke football games (help set up and sell merchandise), etc.

Other stuff you need to know about our group:

  • We are very accepting and open to diversity.
  • Our group has a strong desire to work with the less fortunate and homeless individuals in the local Durham population as well as all over the US.  We have been serving at Urban Ministries of Durham for the past 8 years, so we are very connected and involved in that way.
  • Since our group has traveled to New Orleans, LA two different times, seeing the devastation that still exists there today has really impacted us. We have a huge place in our hearts for the New Orleans community, especially after hearing everyone’s personal story of what happened to them specifically. We hope to always stay connected with the disaster relief projects there in some way or form.
